Water Lily or Lotus Flower?
A lesson I learned and would like to convey in this post is to trust your first instinct.
Me and my friend Stefan were in Hoi An in central Vietnam a few days ago and we passed a small ponds with some flowers. The flowers and the pond looked ordinary so I walked past the pond and the flowers. Something nagged me however so I walked back to the pond and quickly snapped a couple of close up images of one of the flowers. At first it looked like the image was over exposed when i looked in the LCD screen but I didn’t care, i just walked up to Stefan who waited for me.
Once i was back home in Hanoi I opened up the image in Photoshop CS and i was amazed by the colors. I’m no flower expert but i think it’s a water lily or a lotus flower.

Water Lily or Lotus Flower
So something that looked ordinary turned out to be so beautiful. I really love the colors that almost look like painted.

Close up of water lily or lotus flower
In this close up the colors are even more amazing and can you see the small fly in the image?
Is it a Water Lily or a Lotus Flower?

Gorgeous! It really does look like a painting. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for your comment Deanna. It looks like a painting for sure.
Hi Peter
I would like to use your lotus image on a new website – is it possible to purchase it/
many thanks
Robyn
Hi Peter,
I would also like to consider using your image. It’s a lovely picture.
Please let me know what I would need to do/pay for this.
Thanks
Ian
Great Pix. I’m in the process of studying the many parts of flowers and your pix shows me so much. Thanks for sharing.
It’s a lily flower for sure as a Lotus flower does come in this color. And it does not have a ‘shower-head’ kinda seedpods in the middle that grows into lotus seeds that is edible (usually used to make nice sweet desserts or soup in Asia) and it’s leaves are Lily Pads that floats ‘flat’ on water while Lotus leaves are held above water. Lotus are pink / white / light yellow / reddish.
I hope no one uses this pic as a Lotus flower image.
@Fang
Thanks Fang, you seem to have quite a lot of knowledge on this topic.
I was searching for images of lotuses as inspiration for one of my door protector’s paintings that someone commissioned. I love this one. But as Fang indicated above, it is not a lotus but a water lily. It is missing the lotus seed in the center
Thank you, anyway. I love the composition!
